Ableton Push 3 - Building a Song in Session View

Question: I am trying to build a song using the Ableton Push 3 in standalone mode. I am not understanding how to see the entirety of the song. It looks like only the first few beats of the song are what is being played and shown. How is the entire song composed?

Answer: When creating music with the Ableton Push 3, the default work mode is Session View. Session View gives you the ability to have a bird's-eye view of all the different clips, tracks, and scenes.

  • Clip: Each lit-up long rectangle on the grid is a clip. Most clips loop. For example, they can contain a 4-bar drum pattern, melody loop, bassline, recorded audio, or MIDI notes that play an instrument.

  • Track: Each vertical column is a track. All of the clips that that column contains use the same instrument or sound source.

  • Scene: Each horizontal row is a scene. Scenes play one clip from each column at the same time. They are akin to being song sections. For example, scene 1 may be the intro. Scene 2 may be the verse. Scene 3 may be the chorus. Scene 4 may be the bridge.

You can build your song by creating more scenes and triggering them in your desired order. You will then want to record your scene progression live into Arrangement View to build a full track.
